Why Do We Craft?

Think about all the different kinds of crafts there are - scrapbooking, jewelry making, sewing, home decorating, rubber stamping, knitting...and there are so many more. But why do we feel the need to make and do these lovely things for our homes?

Look through the Scriptures and you'll see many examples of crafts and homemaking. God has given us a very special ministry and our crafting is part of that.

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Titus 2:3-5

Home is to be a retreat for you and your family, a refuge, a sanctuary, a paradise. It's about creating an atmosphere that people are drawn to because you have wrapped everything in loveliness. Our ministry in the home is to offer a place of love and peace to everyone who needs it. The crafts we make and the decorating that we do are expressions of ourselves and the love of Christ that lives inside us.

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. Proverbs 14:1

Building means growing, improving and maintaining a happy, healthy home. Once we get beyond cleaning and providing for the physical needs of those living in our home, our creativity kicks in and we'd like to grow something beautiful, improve on the aesthetics and maintain the order we've established. Crafts, gardening and organizing can all create an atmosphere of peace and joy within our four walls.

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bringeth forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Matthew 7:16-20

What kinds of fruit are you known by? Are you following the instructions of the Scripture and keeping your home? Do you take the time to clean and arrange and create loveliness in your home? This is our calling, our purpose set forth by God Himself. Let's take advantage of our creativity and make home beautiful and inviting.
