For this birthday card, I layered the die cut in the middle on two patterns of paper in the same color. All three were then matted on black card stock to anchor them all as one design element.
The background is the same black card stock and a metallic gold patterned paper. The overall design is very masculine, and the sketch could be used for any occasion.

Create that center panel with an image in one block and the sentiment in the other. Overlapping is always fun, or you can keep them in their own spaces, depending on the look you're going for.
Then add strips of two patterned papers behind the image and sentiment. Group them all together with the same card stock you used for your background.
