Faith Can Move Mountains ... But So Can The Truth
We've probably all heard Jesus' story of the mustard seed of faith since we were little. I remember seeing a necklace with a tiny orb containing a single mustard seed and thinking, What, that's it? Tiny person, tiny thoughts, I suppose.
But isn't that the point of the story? The mustard seed is so small, but its result is so powerful.
And Jesus said unto then, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Matthew 17:20
Once again, the disciples just weren't getting it. I know we can be tough on them for not understanding Jesus' words so many times, but would we be any different? I'm not so sure. But this time, Jesus couldn't have been more clear.
You can't do what I've commanded you to do because of your unbelief.
Talk about leading with the truth. Our Lord never said anything to fill time or take up space - His words were chosen for just that moment, for one specific purpose. This was what the disciples needed to hear so they could grow and change and be more like Christ in their ministries.
Isn't that what we each want for our own lives? Yes, I want to understand Scripture better. Yes, I want to learn what the Lord wants me to learn about faith and mountains and tiny seeds.
But I also want to recognize His truth when I hear it. It may be uncomfortable or even terribly painful, but I want to know God's truth. I don't want to waste any more time flailing around in my own little world. I don't want to struggle with unbelief and have Him point it out to me somewhere down the road. I don't want to know I could have moved a mountain, but I didn't because I thought I couldn't.
As we read our devotions and Scriptures and Proverbs for the week, let's dig down deep and discover the truth. Whether it's a story we've read dozens of times or a passage that jumps off the page in an exciting way, let's toss our unbelief out the window! With the truth in hand, we can march into the week with all the hope and confidence of the Lord Himself in our corner.
And that truth is how we'll move those mountains!
