What You Water Grows

I am a self-proclaimed black-thumb gardener. Plants and I don't get along well. I killed a cactus in college - enough said.

But when my leadership academy sent me this peace lily after my mom died, I was determined to keep it alive. I don't know much about dirt, water, and sunshine, but I was willing to do whatever it took to keep it green and thriving.

First I noticed that if I didn't water it every other day, the leaves wilted. One morning they were all pointed straight down to the floor. A few hours after I had watered it, though, it looked so much better! The leaves were bright green again and they were pointing up and out instead of down.

My heart feels the same way some days, as I imagine yours does, too. It's like we're missing one thing that will not only give us life, but help us thrive. And that one thing is so simple.

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. Isaiah 44:3-4

The grasses along the riverbank receive the most water and are the strongest, healthiest plants in the area. They have a constant source of refreshment and vitality, and they can always access that life-giving flow. This sounds like Nature 101, but how quickly we lose sight of how important water is ... until we don't have it.

When my soul is dry and thirsty, only the Living Water will satisfy me. When I'm starting to buckle under the pressures of life, it's the water of the word of God that sustains and freshes me. It's there that I find the answers for every problem I face and the constant reminder that I am loved and filled by the God who created both me and the water that I so desperately need.

If you're starting the week with dry, parched leaves, my prayer is that you will immerse yourself in Scripture today. Everything you need to be strong and vibrant is waiting there for you. What you water grows, and the Lord wants to shower you with every single blessing you need. Will you open your Bible and find them?
