New Year, Same Great God!
For the past couple of weeks and for probably a few more, everyone has been talking about all the newness of the new year. This is that moment when you can stop all the old stuff, start all the new stuff, and hit the reset button on life in general.
While everyone's planning out what to change and what to do better now that 2025 is here, it's so important that we look at the one person who is never going to change in any way, shape or form - our Lord. We can talk all we want to about human nature and heart conditions and determining to do better this time around the sun, but we have to remember that we serve a God who has never and will never change.
Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Psalm 90:1–2
Not even once in all of eternity past has anything about God's character changed. Moses was closer to God than most anyone in history, and when he wrote Psalm 90, he was writing what he knew. He'd been inspired by the Holy Spirit to write the first five books of the Bible, so he had a glimpse at the perfection of God from eternity past.
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Malachi 3:6
The Old Testament closes with another prophet sharing God's word, reminding His people that no matter what was happening in their lives and circumstances, who He is will never, ever change. Israel, and now us, will never have to be afraid of being destroyed by the enemy because God's promises will remain the same forever.
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Hebrews 13:8
As the Son of God, we see the same characteristics in Jesus Christ that we see in God Himself. From Genesis 1:1 through the end of Revelation, we see an unchanging, set-in-stone Savior. His character, His personality, and His purpose in our lives never wavers at any point in the past, so we can be confident in Him in our future.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17
Not even a shadow of turning. Not the slightest hint that at some point something about God can change. Not a little variable that might shift, not a trait that may slide a bit, not an inkling that something could be different tomorrow. Just not.
It's a new year, but we're serving the same great God. Yesterday, today, and forever, He remains the same. That's the confidence we can build on as we decide what to be dedicated and committed to changing or keeping the same in 2025. What a beautiful foundation to build upon!
